There are vast differences between life today and a century ago. Way too many, in fact, to address here. I suggest you get a copy of the classic book "The Good Old Days--They Were Terrible!" by Otto L. Bettmann. This is an easy-to-read book full of fascinating insights into 19th century life. It should give you some good insights into how good we have it today!anon

Another quick resource book is "The Writer's Guide to Everyday Life in the 1800s," by Marc McCutcheon.
