greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom Pages : One Thread

Hello All,

I am about to disclose a work in progress. Please view it as such. I risk the possibility that the disclosure is premature but I wanted to get the show on the road. If you will point your browsers to:

you will find a web site offered in the memory of AJG. Only the home page is available at the moment. Others I have in mind will be available as I can develop them. This is being done on an absolute shoestring. There is no monetary payment for the site, the fee instead is lack of real control over much except the content. The advertising which appears on every "free" page is placed by maxpages.com as the price for getting on board. That is O.K. except that I will have to write a "disclaimer" page disavowing any responsibility or warrantee for any advertising appearing thereon. If the word gets out that the site is available and use is made of the "forum," I may be able in time to leave Maxpages and develop a "real" web site for the project. The "forum" I mentioned is something I have wanted to create ever since we started our e-mail discussions. I will describe it in detail on a page of Freedompages, but for the moment point your browser to:

At the top is "Welcome to LUSENET" and a listing of the Public Forums. On PCs, hold down the CTRL key and hit the "End" key (I don't know how this is done on the Macs). This will take you to the bottom of the page where the "Private Forums" are listed. There you will see "Freedom Pages." Click on it and you will go to an introductory page requiring a password to get into the forum. This, to some extent, will keep promiscuous disclosures to a minimum as, to the best of my ability, the password will be given only to graduates of V-201, whether or not they continue to espouse Volitional Science. Graduation from V-201 will be the only primary criterion for admission to the forum. V-50 people will be invited to take the V-201 tape course and contact me when completed. This site is also provided free as a project of the originator, Philip Greenspun, an MIT grad, photographer and author of web programming books which he unobtrusively advertises on the site. It is my intention to support my work and create value for the site and forum by charging a modest annual fee, say $12, for use of the forum. When I have qualified a person as a V-201 grad and received payment, I will disclose the password. Naturally, guarantees to be specified later will be in effect. For the present and to credit your initial participation in the Center for the Study of Volition, there will be no charge (also, no guarantee). I take it as a matter of course that, regardless of your present view of Volitional Science or AJG or FEI, that you still have regard for primary property and will not disclose the password to any person. If I note unauthorized persons using the forum, I will e-mail them to desist and if they do not, I will change the password and notify the remaining participants. Obviously one of them may be responsible for disclosing the password and may continue to do so. In that case, I shall shut down the forum and return any payments. The forum itself is straightforward and self-explanatory. It is in the "Question and Answer" format which should be viewed by us as a "Posting and Response" format. A Posting (Question) may be followed by as many Responses (Answers) as the Posting demands. And Responses may follow and refer to other Responses. When you have a new topic to introduce, do so as a new Question (Posting). There is a button to click if you want to be notified of any responses to your postings, etc. You will be emailed automatically with the responses as they are entered. If someone is responding to someone else, then, of course, that person will receive the e-mail, not you. It is up to you to check the forum from time to time to see what's happening. There is not much word processing functionality to the forum software, so I suggest that you create your posting on your word processor then copy and paste it into the forum. That way you can minimize your use of the Internet connection. In the same way, you can copy and paste from the forum into your word processor. I have taken the liberty of copying and pasting Joseph's "John Stuart Mill" posting and Alvin's reply into the forum so that you may see how it works. Any further response to Joseph may be done there if you like the system. Otherwise, continue to use the e-mail. O.K., let's get under way and if I haven't covered something or you are having trouble, let me know. And please inform me of what you think of the forum!

The password for now is: Integrity.

Try it out and have fun,

Larry
