When was the Central of Georgia taken over and by whom?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Central of Georgia Railway Historical Soc : One Thread

I'm not from Georgia but was planning on doing some railfanning there and was wondering what happened to the CGRR. I haven't been able to find much information at all on this railroad anywhere. I bought a current map of Atlanta and it still currently shows the CGRR lines. Do any CGRR trains still run on these lines or were they bought by CSX or NS? I guess another one bites the dust?

Thanks, Bry L

As a corporate entity, the Central of Georgia Railroad Co. still exists. As an operating enitiy, it is part of the Norfolk Southern Corp. and its equipment and trains are indistinguishable except for the small sublettering "CG" on some locomotives and cars.

The Central of Georgia Railroad Co. was formed July 1, 1971, from the merger of the Central of Georgia RailWAY, the Savannah & Atlanta Railway, the Georgia & Florida Railway, and the Wrightsville & Tennille Railroad. All of these companies were subsidiaries of the Southern Railway Company at the time of merger, so it was more or less a corporate cleanup.

The Central of Georgia Railway Company ceased to exist as an independent operating railroad on June 17, 1963, when Southern Railway exercised control (control was purchased earlier, but could not be exercised pending ICC approval of the purchase.)

Hope this answers the question.
