Occasional Lockups on K2500S

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Kurzweil Users : One Thread

Out of the blue, my K2500S suddenly went to a blank screen while sitting idle. A hard reset resulted in an eventual blank screen too. I then entered the monitor rom, and ran the diagnostics. After running the memory tests, and the PRAM and PRAM2 tests, I was able to get a hard reset to result in the 'Initializing all memory...' message, and the synth returned to normal operation.

I'm running V2.52 OS and have the V342 objects, with all rom options. (Still waiting for my KDFX to arrive.) Any idea what's going on? As the synth was idle at the time this happened, I have no idea what could have triggered this situation. Any comments are appreciated.

(ps: bravo, Mike, for adding the forum. Let's hope many users chime in with comments and questions - Carl )

re: Occasional Lockups on K2500S

Carl,

Thanks for visiting the forum.

In regards to your question, that one is a bit of a mystery to me. There are however a few things that may have caused this....

You say that the K2500S was idle when this lockup occured but, there have been circumstances when a corrupt file causes a lockup. Did you have any samples, programs or sequences loaded in? Also, is your K2500S MIDI'ed up to something else? Certainly some strange incoming MIDI data could have caused the problem.

Needless to say, unless this re-occurs I don't think you have anything to worry about. Kurzweil keyboards are much like computers and occassionally a hard reset clears everything up.

Best of luck,

Hi, Mike. I think I found what caused my lockup. It happened again, so I ran the internal diagnostics. I noticed that it said my PRAM expansion was not found! I opened it up, and found that the PRAM had become loose in the sockets. I reseated it, and have had no further problems. However, the pins seem pretty loose even when seated all the way down. Do you recommend a spot of solder to hold them in place? I move the K2.5 fairly often, using a flight case, but it still could come loose again, and I'd hate to have to open up the unit in a club while everyone is waiting. Is there any approved manner to strengthen the connection? I don't intend to ever remove the PRAM, so soldering one pin on each end would do the trick.
