Below is a description of the AuthentiX software.
AuthentiX (rhymes with Flicks), for Microsoft's Internet Information Server - IIS3, IIS4. Allows you to protect premium content directories and individual files by asking web-surfers for their username and password. Yet still keep your NT user/password database separate and private. Supports fine-grained (ie, sub-page level) access control for web pages. Restrict user access to an HTML button, field, URL, or text. Choose Cookie based protection or 100% cookie-free Basic Authentication protection (the default). Validate against ODBC or the built-in database. Manipulate the AuthentiX username/password database from Active Server Pages using the supplied OCX module. Includes automated signup source code for ASP. Easily retrieve the name of the currently logged in user.

Several things about this product are interesting. First, validation against a seperate database (not the NT SAM) is a good thing, even if we do not plan to use this feature. Second, it appears that within a web page, access to a button, field, URL or text can be restricted. This is a good thing. All intranet users can see the same page but not necessarily access all portions of that page. Third, the automatic registration can be used for training classes. -- SpannMan
