Cat not too affectionate

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

My MC is not all that affectionate. When I get home he loves me to cuddle him for about 10 minutes. Sometimes he lets me hug him for a few minutes. He does like to sit by me. He is 8 mos old.

Response to Cat not to affectionate

This is very typical behavior for a Maine Coon. They like to be /with/ you, but not necessarily /on/ you. They're not generally lap-cats. He is being affectionate in his way.

At 8 months old, your kitten is about the equivilent of a 6 year old little boy, he doesn't want to be hugged and kissed! Try some interactive play, using toys he likes. Also remember that dawn and dusk are play time for cats, so he will want to do more running and chasing at those times. Try to let him chose the times to cuddle. I say "snuggle time" to my cats when ever they chose to snuggle. They will then learn what that means, and if I say "snuggle time" and pat my lap, they will often come over and snuggle.

Remember to always put them down before they jump down, so they don't feel restricted, will always look forward to more. ps- I've always found that cats to sit in my lap - in the bathroom!!

I recieved my mc for a christmas present from my mom, it was love at first sight for me, but for Kiera, it took almost a month before she let me pet her. Now that she is comfortable with me, she will sleep with me at night, purring all the while! She even has her own blanket that she sleeps on, (my old thermal blanket.) But when it comes to other people, she is still very standoffish. So far i am the only one she will let pet her. Although she loves to play with my mom's Scotty puppies, (5 weeks old.) she is very gentle with them. Don't worry to much, it is actually a relief to have such an independent cat, i don't have to worry about stepping on her!

I have a 5 month old mc. He is also very unaffectionate. He has been nicknamed devil-cat by my friends. After about 4 months(I bought him at 6 weeks), he finally warmed up to my girlfriend. My vet says that this is usual and I don't really mind.

I would also like any feedback from othe MC owners. E-Mail-----TrentonC@aol.com

Our Maine Coon liked to sit on our laps except when the weather warmed-up. He was very sensitive to heat. Once it got above 70 degrees, he would sit near by but not on our laps. They are a cold weather c

My MC is also unaffectionate. When I rescued him from Animal Control, he was kneading and he was even drooling! However, once he came home all of it stopped. Now, one and a half years later, he follows me around, but doesn't like to be held. He teases me with poses and by exposing his tummy, I can pet him but not holding (of couse that doesn't stop me!) I can never go to the bathroom by myself, because he will open the door and go in with me. It may be more information that you asked for, but if I'm sitting in the toiled then he will not stop until I pet him and hugh him. There is the only place where I can do what I please with him. Even when I take a bath, he sits by the window INSIDE the shower. I love him dearly.

My MC also likes to follow me into the bathroom. He will sit quietly (while I am sitting) and wait for me. Also he is only affectionate with me, and not other family members. He likes to be brushed and petted but if I pet him for longer than five minutes he will bite my hand. I usually wear long sleeves when playing with him or petting him. Everyone says he is aloof to most people and he is. P. H.

My 3-year-old MC, Maya, is definitely NOT a lap cat. I had read this about the breed before getting one, so I was prepared. I figured it would be a good thing not to have to kick her off all the time when I was working like I did with my last cat (oh, the guilt!). Anyway, I wasn't prepared for how much I'd miss feeling the purring vibrations against my legs or tummy. Maya is very affectionate in her way, though. She loves to sit next to me (in fact, that was the very action that made me choose her at the breeders house--she jumped up on the couch and made herself comfy right next to me). She also loves to sleep under the covers (and will scratch at them to try to get in), at least for a little while. She tends to be a little skittish, and I've always thought that she likes feeling safe under the covers. When she's under there, she lets me pet the heck out of her, and even encourages me to rub her tummy (but once outside the covers, the tummy region is forbidden). It has taken some adjusting of my idea of what it means for a cat to show affection (no lap- sitting, no holding), but she's definitely worth it. And yes, I still hold out hope that she'll continue to mellow with age (as all of my cats have, after all), and maybe...just maybe... she'll settle on my lap on a day other than when I've just returned from a trip of a few days or more (note to self: or I must take more trips).

My 7 month old MC has her moods! Usually once or twice a day she'll actually come looking for me. She cuddles up on my lap and purrs for about 5 to 10 minutes then off she goes. Interestingly enough, she only does this with me and not my husband (who she adores!)
