sampling without the S option

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Kurzweil Users : One Thread

I am looking into getting a K2000, but I am just learning about it, so I have a basic question.

I know that the S option (which makes a K2000S rather than a K2000) is necessary to sample from analog or digital sources. Is it possible, without this option, to "download" samples via midi? That is, without the S option, can the internal waveforms of the K2000 be changed to something other than their presets?

Thanks, Greg

You could sample sounds into a computer (through a sound card) and then transfer them into the K2000 via SCSI (fast) or MIDI (very slow). The K2000 and K2500 are unique in that they also allow you to completely edit the internal ROM waveforms. (Some emu modules allow you to edit the sample start point, but thats it.)

Hope this helps, Thanks for visiting the K2500 Zone and Forum. Mike Martin

<< Wow -- I'm surprised. So you're saying that, even without the S option, samples can be fully edited, and can also be replaced/changed via MIDI?>>

You can load samples in, either through disk or dumped via SCSI or MIDI and can edit them to your hearts content, without the sample option.

<< Does this mean that all the sample memory in a base K2000 (without S) is not ROM, but static RAM or something?>>

No. You can take any ROM sample, edit it's start, end and loop points and then save it as something else. Sample RAM is not needed you are simply pointing towards the sample ROM sample with new reference points.

<< If one *does* edit/replace the original samples in the K2000, can one get them back, say from disk?>>

More than likely you would save sample edits to a user location and not overwrite the orginal sample number. Even you put the new sample in place of the old one, all you would have to do is delete it and you'd be back to where you started. << Looking at info on the Kurzweil site, I think I figured out something. Please tell me if this sentence is true: the Sampling option isn't necessary for you to be able to edit samples, but you *do* need sample RAM installed, since the original samples are in ROM; and sample RAM is not installed by default.>>

You do need sample RAM if you are going to load samples in from disk, or transfer them into the unit from SCSI or MIDI. You do NOT need sample RAM to make edits in existing ROM samples.

Take Care,

Mike

Another question: in terms of transferring via SCSI, does one need an upgrade to do this? Does one need an internal hard drive, or some other addition, to connect a computer to a K2000 via SCSI? If not, how exactly does one make this connection?

Thanks, greg

There is nothing additional needed on the K2000/K2500 to do a SCSI transfer a sample to a computer. You would simply need a SCSI card on the computer and a proper cable connecting the two machines. After that you would also need software (such as Sound Forge 4.5) that will be able to transmit and recieve samples in this manner.

Hope this helps, THanks for visiting the K2500 Zone
