Anchor tags...

Hi hi,

First off, the Lane Proposal is the one out of the Tools You Can Use section. I think that's the one you wanted. If you want the other one too, just let me know. Couldn't remember if you said you wanted that one too (so dazzled was I).

Forgot to say it (imagine that), but when you were describing what you want to do with your proposal/forum threads, etc. I thought of "anchor" tags...

Doan know if you know about them or not, but the can come in handy when you've got people flipflopping back and forth in and out of a document you want to keep moving around in. First, here's a link to a really good little online tutorial you may just want to pop open right now and bookmark.

Second, here's a good link to a one page basic help file/tutorial that has an explanation of what they are and how they work in it. Real concise. Handy, doncha know.

Anchor tages look like this:

<a href="#law">Canada's Marshall Law</a>

Canada's Marshall Law

And what they do is take you to the place where the other part of the tag is on the page. Clicking the link leads to the "name" tag that looks like this

<a name="#law">

(this will look screwy in email. You'll see it below, and it should work in the forum when you click the link above. I think, although I've never tried this in the forums before... We'll see.)

It leads to the lower part of the thing from Declan M. that came in while I was typing this. Thought I'd send it along... Cheery stuff.

I don't know about you, but I tend to get a little spooked when government officials start secretly planning for martial law.

Robert Bennett (R-Utah), chair of the Senate's Y2K committee, has asked the US military of its plans for martial law in the event of Year 2000 disruptions. I've temporarily placed the transcript of that June 1998 hearing online so you can read it yourself in full.

'Martial law' rushed for Y2K chaos Report warns government to be ready to invoke federal Emergencies Act

Saturday 12 December 1998

David Pugliese
The Ottawa Citizen

The federal government should consider invoking the Emergencies Act, the successor to the War Measures Act, if the millennium bug causeswidespread chaos, according to newly obtained government documents.

The report, by the Year 2000 contingency planning group of Emergency Preparedness Canada, calls for orders and regulations for the Emergencies Act to be ready by the end of March. [...]

"Among the activities that must be done to meet the problems resulting from Y2000 failures is development of relevant emergency orders and regulations required for the invocation of emergency provisions under the Emergencies Act." [...]

In the reports, military officials also raise concern that their ability to help out if the millennium bug causes widespread problems relies heavily on Canada's electrical, transportation, food and water and sewage systems having their own Year 2000 problems under control:

"The ability of the (Canadian Forces) to provide civil assistance is highly dependent on the state of preparedness of these infrastructure items since the CF, like everyone else, is highly dependent on smooth delivery of these supplies and services," the documents state. "Without aggressive action in these industrial and service sectors, the (Canadian Forces) may not be able to make a significant impact across the nation as a force of last resort."

Military officials point out that more than 16,000 troops were needed to deal with the effects of the ice storm that hit Ontario and Quebec this year. But the millennium bug, the report states, "has the potential of creating a demand orders of magnitude greater than this, which are well beyond the CF's capability to respond." [...]

Here (you'll be able to see this in the email) is an anchor tag that should take you back to the top... The thing is, you an put them in anywhere on a document and add them to the end of its url after the .html#housing - for example - would take you from this forum to a document someplace elsewhat and deposit you at the "housing section" of that piece... Here's that "back to top" anchor tag...

Nighty night,
Bill
