How is John Salathe's last name pronounced? I've always thought that it should be pronounced: suh-LAY-thay. I'm going to Yosemite this June and I want to know how to say his name correctly so I can tell some good tales around the evening campfires!

Good thing you asked, it should be sah-lah-THEY. At least this is the only pronunciation I've heard. If you bone up on Steve Roper's Camp IV you may be able to fool everyone around the campfire that you are an El Cap vet. One good line would be "The El Nino, eet ezz not so bad".

I have a friend from Cerritos Ca. who shares the same last name and pronounces it sa-LAETH. Like with a long e. I've also heard people pronounce it SA-lathey...yada yada yada...Tomato tomatoe...just call him smith.

My Fathers name was John salathe and we always pronounced it Sal-A-Thee, just as it looks with a long e
