What do you like to drink when you go out? Do you have a special or signature drink? Is there something you made up that you want to share with everyone?

Are you much of a drinker? I'm not, but I'll try different things. I basically only like drinks that taste like I'm having milkshakes or lemonade. I really shouldn't even bother drinking, it's just that's pretty much all they offer in a bar. I get sick of the stinkeye from bartenders for ordering another glass of water.

Since I don't turn 21 until October, this is all speculation.:) I love Aftershock (cinnamon schnapps) mixed with mountain dew. Even better is Avalanche (peppermint schnapps) mixed with mountain dew. And they both mix very nicely with lemonade:) And Pamie, if you like Hootch, you should try Two Dogs Lemonade Brew sometime. I swear by the stuff.:)

I'm the same way, I only like drinks that don't taste like alcohol.

I Love White Russians (Kahlua, Vodka and milk). It tastes sort of like chocolate milk. I rarely drink anything else. But Bailey's Irish Cream is also awesome.

Once in awhile, I'll get RumpleMintz shots. Pure mint, man. Awesome.

The down side to these things is that they taste so darn good, I drink too many of them too quickly and then end up feeling sick.

Bleah...I can't stand any of the intensely flavored or sickly sweet drinks. Those are the alcoholic equivalents of the guy who doesn't bathe and wears a ton of cologne to cover it up. My favorite drinks are good strong beers like Lagunitas IPA and Anchor Steam Liberty Ale. I'm not a big hard liquor drinker but when I have it I like shots of Wild Turkey or Yukon Jack.

Well, it's not exactly my favorite, but there is this lil' drink we like to call Mav Punch. It's kinda got the same effect on ya... it tastes like (imagine that) PUNCH - you don't really taste the alcohol, so you drink. And drink. And drink.

As for my favorite - lately it's been mudslides. Or I should say it WAS mudslides. No more drinkie for me. I also love a good SoCo and 7-up, 7&7, Malibu & Coke.

one word : TEQUILA!

forget the salt, forget the lemon and go for the gold - literally! i used to be a tequila freak; after friday night parties, one of our friends would drag us to the liquor store (i'm canadian) at around ten am saturday morning, and make me buy the tequila so he could giggle while i got ID'd. (yes, i look 12) and then we'd head home and drink it. the whole thing. at 10:30am.

now, i can't do that anymore - but even though i like the taste, beer and wine put me to sleep so hard liquor is really my only choice ;p although now that i'm a health nut, i hardly ever drink. i'd like my liver to still be around in a few years.

but i like Mike's Hard Lemonade, which i think is canadian but basically the same deal as hooch in that it doesn't even taste like alcohol, i used to drink blue lagoons, also very lemonadey but with that blue ciraco (sp?) stuff in it. and i just discovered grape knee highs - which are potent and HUGE and just delicious!

As an american in britain I agree with you Pamie. Hooch is dangerous. Cider is worse for me... love the taste, but it gives me the WORST hangovers. My fav hooch was the Passion Smooch they brought out for V day a few years ago.

Do they have Bacardi Breezers in the states? The lime one is so oh ummy... and doesn't give me a hangover. I can always trust rum.

Tequila and koolaide had me on the floor feeling like someone was sticking a thousand pins in my tummy. I can't drink it now. And peach schnapps was the first thing I ever got drunk (and very sick) on ... I WILL be ill if I drink it. Even a dash...even if I don't know it is in a drink. No sex on the beach for me. :(

My fav new drink however is absolut, cranberry juice and oj, or anything else citris.

i have to say that i am a fan of the midori sour (midori and sweet and sour) it tastes like and Otter Pop. Sir Issac Lime to be exact. i do not like drinks that taste like alcohol so nothing with tequilla for me. I tried this drink called an Alabama Slammer at a club once and dug it. i think it had oj, grenadine, southern comfort and slo gin. all i have to say is YUM .. well yum and WHOA. knocked me on my ass it did. so of course i had 3 :) sabrina

i love white russians. dead nazis (rumplemintz and jagermeister) are a fun shot type drink my best friend introduced me to. i'm a big fan of raspberry schnapps and ginger ale.

but the best is the official drink of the preakness - black eyed susans. one shot each of vodka, triple sec and rum (sometimes i add peach schnapps to taste, as well). fill the rest of the glass with equal parts pineapple and orange juice. in baltimore, the widely acknowledged susan recipe is equal parts liquor, fruit juice and stupidity.

they're good. i made them for my friends at school preakness weekend. we got slopped. lots of fun.

oh, and if i have to drink beer (which i prefer not to)? i'm addicted to leinenkugel's, a great beer from a brewery in wisconsin.

Beer or wine.

Okay, maybe a gin and tonic at a wedding reception or high school reunion...

Wine with a meal, what ever kind goes with the food. Or, for just sitting around sipping a glass of wine probably a white zinfandel.

Ah, but a good beer. Not a Bud Light (or Lite or whatever). A good beer. I tend to keep Killian's Red in my refrigerator. Once in a while Sam Adams, but I prefer Killian's. Sometimes I'll buy a case of Fosters, but what they sell here really came from Canada and it doesn't seem the same as drinking it in Sydney or in London.

I like pubs... I was in London a few weeks ago and as usual managed to have a few pints during the course of my stay there. And there is a local bar here that has a very pub like atmosphere and offers sixty- nine different beers (they have a multi-page beer menu... also a coffee menu... and a scotch menu). Sometimes I try various brews, sometimes I just order a Whitbread (an English brand that they have on tap). Ah, a good beer and some fish and chips... (This place also has some thermonuclear style buffalo chicken wings *HOT* that will surely encourage the ordering of another beer!)

My favorite drink is a Black and Tan. It is half Guiness and half Bass Ale. The Bass is poured first, then the Guiness and they stay seperate. It is great. I also like Newcastle Brown Ale and Fosters.

Pretty much anything with vodka and cranberry is wonderful, whether it's a sea breeze, a cosmopolitan, or Absolut cranberry vodka.

But I generally avoid sweet drinks, except margaritas, and even then I like them more tart than sweet. Sweet drinks lead to bad, bad hangovers. Red wine gives me a headache but I drink it like water. I don't particularly like beer and I'm about to just declare myself a non beer drinker.

Pamie, I'm going to pass on the very wise advice of my very wise mother, who also does not drink very much. Learn to drink bourbon or Jack Daniels, and learn to drink it neat. You can teach yourself to like the taste (if you do, let me know how you did it because I haven't managed it), and you can sip one bourbon all night and no one will bother you. Everyone will think you're a bad ass bourbon drinker.

I think this only works for women.

Being from Milwaukee....I don't much like beer. I did walk into the bar tonight and saw "Hooch". The lemon was was great now I have to try the orange flavor. I usually have vodka lemonades and for shots I'll drink slippery nipples, cherry cheesecakes, or Dr.'s. I assumed you could get Leinies anywhere, not just Chippewa Falls, Wi. Go to the Leinie Lodge and sit around trying samples. As for Old Milwaukee (Old Millwater)that's the cheap stuff here that you buy with food stamps. Gimmee a foty 'o dat Ol' Mawahkee!

My favorite thing to drink hands down is Boone's Fuzzy Navel. I know there is hardly any alcohol in it, and I have to drink two whole bottles before feeling any kind of buzz, but if I could I'd drink this all the time. It's so delicious. On my 21st birthday I was at a Halloween party (my birthday is November 1) and after midnight my friend handed me a bottle of the stuff because she didn't have a present. I have been in love ever since. If i want to get drunk I get myself a bottle of Skyy Vodka. Recently my sister and I have discovered Sour Apple Scnapps. Mix it with some 7-Up and vodka and mmm mm. I don't know if this is a real drink or what, but it tastes great and has a lovely green color.

When I was younger, I used to love that sweet stuff. The sweeter the better -- ice cream drinks, anything with Amaretto or Bailey's. It didn't take me long to outgrow it, though, thankfully. Then in college I drank lots of gin, which I still love. Gin & tonics with a big squeeze of lime on a hot summer's day -- sheer bliss. I used to drink Scotch, but after pulling not one but two Jimi Hendrixes after drinking it, I can't bear even the smell anymore (and the last one was something like 15 years ago!). Same goes for any other type of whiskey; they all smell too much like Scotch to me now.

I also like a nice DRY heavy-bodied white wine; I like red wines and champagne, but neither of them like me. Both ALWAYS, without fail, give me a headache, then a railroad-spike-through-the-temple migraine the next day.

Mostly, though, I am a Beer Girl. The darker the better. I love a good, dark, put-hair-on-your-chest beer. I'm one of the few people I know who actually likes Guiness. (There's something about being from Texas that makes you prefer to drink piss, like Coors Light, which I just don't get, even though I've lived here my whole life!) My two faves lately have been Newcastle and Negra Modelo, but almost anything dark and not too hoppy will please me. And my high school friends and I were drinking Shiner Bock way back in the '70s before it was a cool "microbrew" and they started charging an arm and a leg for it. Unfortunately I have been trying to lose weight of late, and since light beer "counts" less than regular beer on the program I'm on, I've been drinking Amstel. Tastes like water, but better that those white bread American light beers. Although -- I must admit that I love beer so much that if the only alcohol available is warm Milwaukee's Best and I am in the mood to drink, I'll even down that kind of swill! (Can ya tell I'm a beer snob? NAH!)

Never tried that Hooch stuff. I do like lemon flavored stuff, if it's not too sweet. But I'll probably just stick to my beer.

I gave up drinking alcohol about nine years ago. I found that it gave me sneezing fits, strong enough to annoy other people! Believe me, I went through a process of elimination to find this out. "Beer? maybe it's the yeast. Try wine. Oh, that makes me sneeze also? try vodka. What?? even that gives me fits?"

So I switched to non-alcoholic beer, which doesn't make me sneeze.

So I guess I'm not an alcoholic after all, since I was able to give it up without too much trouble.

Amaretto Sours.

As an alcohol wimp, I find myself only drinking things that are fruity, don't burn my throat, and don't have vodka in them.

If you don't know how to make an amaretto sour:

3 parts amaretto (or just fill the glass with ice and amaretto liquor and leave 1/3 inch at the top for sour mix) and 1 part sweet and sour mix.

Kick-ass stuff.

It's even better if you run it in a blender - like an alcoholic Slurpee!

P.S. I also love Arbor Mist wine - fruit-flavored white zinfandel. I told you I'm a wimp.

I'm a pussy at drinking too. I HATE the taste of alcohol and will only drink if it's not noticeable. Hence I only drink AMARETTO SOURS. These are really YUMMY and I can drink a gallon of the stuff.

A little grenadine, a little fruit juice, a little ice, and a whole heapin' bucketload of bourbon..tastes like a little kid's mocktail, makes you act like you just swallowed a gallon of everclear. Being a former extremely heavy drinker, I've gone through several favorite drinks. At one point it was tequila. A friend of mine and I would drink a liter every night for almost a whole summer. By the end of the summer we had forgotten not only the salt and lime, but the shot glass as well. After a particularly nasty bout with a backyard, I started experimenting with other drinks. For a while it was scotch and water (an attempt to be distinguished), then I started trying different beers (all kinds depending on moods), then red wine, then all the crazy shots, then expensive stuff like shots of Grand Marnier (a former employer loved the stuff) and finally I settled on vodka (either w/ cranberry or tonic)if I'm drinking liquor. On a weekend binge I bought out my favorite bar of their supply of Kettle One. After that, they let me go to the store and bring in my own bottle (if I'm drunk I tend to tip too well, and if you tip well enough you can get away with a lot).

Now here's what I've learned in all that time. The problem with all of the fruity drinks is that they have too much sugar. This, combined with dehydration, is what causes the hangover. Light colored liquors generally cause less of a hangover. I read somewhere that vodka, gin and good blended scotch (not single malt-it tastes better but will hurt you worse) cause the least. A good way to lessen dehydration is to mix liquor an water, or alternate drinks of water and liquor.

Most importantly, don't feel bad about just ordering water. Trust me, as a former bartender I can tell you it's a hell of a lot less trouble than making some kind of off the wall fruity froo-froo drink (especially daquiris if they don't have a machine). All you need to do is leave a dollar tip for your first glass and the bartender will gladly refill for you all night.

I am really one of those people who will drink anything (NO GIN!). Working in a bar gives you a great opportunity to test out new and interesting (that word looks wrong)drinks. In my long career as a drinker I've tried a lot of things, but I've found that as I get olders I can't handle a lot of stuff. Beer makes me feel like a big bloated blimp-girl. Gin makes me want to hurl. Wine (unless with a meal) gets me so completely hammered that I can barely remember my own name. Champagne gets me off my face, and this is a great pity because the media darlings I work with crack open the Moet at the earliest opportunity ... 'the share price is up! Crack open the champagne!!' 'I've finished my filing! Crack open the champagne!!'. If I have more than one glass of the stuff I want to go on a massive bender, which just isn't a good idea on a school night.

So I'm with Beth - vodka is the drink of choice - either with tonic, with cranberry, or as a Seabreeze.

I'll also never say no to a sly Pimms in the sunshine.

I forgot to post our favorite margarita recipe. 1.5 oz good tequila (Cuervo 1800 is perfect), 1/2 oz. Cointreau, 1 oz sour mix, 1 oz lime juice. Shake over ice in a cocktail strainer, and serve in a salted glass.

What makes them really good is using a combination of key lime juice and Rose's lime juice. The key lime juice is really really tart, so if you use a whole ounce of that you'll make grown men cry. (Right, Eric?) We've found that 2/3 Rose's, 1/3 key lime is about right -- still extremely tart, but drinkable.

I didn't drink much until halfway through college and even then it was only stuff like amaretto and midori sours (still like those) and wine coolers and beer.
Now, I like Dos Equis, my favorite beer, and I like stronger drinks like gin and tonics, whiskey sours, long island iced teas and my current favorite, Mexican martinis from trudy's. Those are damned good.
At home, I have big bottles of kahlua and of amaretto, so lots of times I'll mix amaretto and orange juice or vodka and orange juice or just orange juice with rubbing alcohol. Really, orange juice is good with just about anthing.
Now, some folks around here (ahem, CHUY) give me crap because I once accidentaly ordered a Rum Runner at Bennigan's without knowing what it was. Next thing I know, they're bringing me this big pink froofry drink and Chuy's making fun of me. I mean, it SOUNDS manly, doesn't it. Say it like a pirate:

RUM RUNNER!!!

Sadly, there was no manliness to be had that night, and I had to slink into a corner, drinking a pink drink with umbrellas through a curly straw. My girlfriend was so ashamed.

I was born/raised in New Orleans, and whenever I go back there the abundance of drunken tourists drives me nuts. When I visit the relatives during the Mardi Gras season my cousins and I like to head downtown and have a rollicking good game of 'Kick the Comatose Fratboy'. I haven't had one in a long while, but I think highly of the Mind Eraser. Predictably enough, I'm not sure I remember how to make them correctly, but I think they go like this: Fill a glass (a real glass - a pint or water tumbler) with ice. Pour in a shot a kahlua. Pour a shot of vodka on top of that, and then fill it with seltzer. Your goal here is to keep the various liquids separate.

Then shove a straw down to the bottom of the glass and drink the whole thing in one fell swoop. The kahlua is think and sweet and coats your tongue, so you barely notice the vodka go by, and then the seltzer cleanses your palate and you're ready for another.

Be warned, though - if you're not a regular drinker, you should probably take a break after two of these and make sure that your head is still connected to your body. They're wicked.

It's never made me sick yet, it's not sweet, and it's sort of an unusual drink, so people think you must be interesting. PLus I read in the new Brett Easton Ellis book (Glamorama) that it's "a hip nineties drink." (Who knew?)

I used to tend bar occasionally many, MANY moons ago. I only did it one day a week, and all we basically served were frozen margaritas from a rita machine (since that was the house specialty), so I don't really count it as bartending experience. But the "secret" recipe there made the best damn margies I've ever had. (And way better on the rocks than frozen!) I say "secret" in quotation marks because I'm about to divulge the recipe. Now, it's been a very long time, as I said, so you'll have to bear with my lack of specifics, but here goes. (Sorry I don't remember exact proportions of liquors and lime juice, but experimentation is what makes being a drunk so much fun, right?)

This was a very basic margarita recipe: tequila, Triple Sec, and lime juice, plenty of salt on the rim. Nothing fancy. But the "secret" of it was that instead of 2 parts tequila to 1 part Triple Sec (which is the "standard" recipe), we used EQUAL parts of each. It takes some of the "bite" out of the tequila and makes it nice and smooth. (Although you can still taste the tequila just fine; it just takes a little of the edge off.) Plus the smoothness encourages you to drink lots more, so you get totally hammered! (That's why we had a 2-margarita limit!) We also used frozen lime juice concentrate -- not limeADE, lime JUICE. No sugar added. Those puppies rocked. You could probably make it with frou-frou liquors like Grand Marnier if you wanted, but I like 'em best with a medium-high-end tequila (not too high or you're just "wasting" a good tequila by mixing it; you want to save those for shots or sipping), Triple Sec, and unsweetened fresh or frozen lime juice. Don't forget to salt the hell out of the rim. Yum. But I'm a total purist -- I can't bear to ruin a perfectly good margarita (rocks, please -- none of that frozen bullshit -- unless it's REALLY HOT outside!) with crap like blue curacao, strawberries, melon... Ghhhaaaah! Just the thought of it's making me gag!

And, mmm-mmm, I shore do loves me some good tequila!

pamie, I just thought of another question you could ask here, along these booze lines: "What's the WEIRDEST thing you've ever drunk?" I could answer that right now: Tequila & Dr Pepper! (ugh! I don't recommend it -- and I'm a huge fan of both beverages -- but hey, I was in high school, and that was all we had!)

Generally I'm driving (or I'm aware that I am with irresponsible people so I'll end up driving home anyway even if they drove us TO the place-with-alcohol), so I get sodas.

When I'm not driving or I'm at home, I make the best frozen White Russians on the planet. (Hints: vanilla vodka, french vanilla ice cream, generous bartender=good drink.) If someone feels too manly to have one, which is rare once they've had a sip, I do keep all our vodka in the freezer (generally Absolut if flavored, Stoli if not...there's also a weird Russian chocolate-flavored vodka that's nice), and offer that. Very cold vodka...that's good too.

White Russians are my signature drink to the point where people pointed at me and laughed during The Big Lebowski. And my most recent ex didn't know how startled I was to hear him order 'my' drink...before he knew I liked them!
