default settings?

Question: What if mame team decides to change default settings for some game so that new settings give you more points than old...which settings are to be used for recordings? What if they decided to change settings for every beta? What if they decided that default for Tron is 20 men instead of 4 This seems to have happened in paperboy. Donut broke his record describing: 'This is grand slam score (HW: 388,930; MR: 152,100; ES: 134,029) on default settings -
Default in mame35 final is Easy/3 lives/extra every 10k. Easier than the original default from early versions. Settings are now adjustable with dip setup.'. I think previous settings were better(same as most arcades had),new settings are too easy. I Couldn't find TG-settings anywhere Paperboy delivering.....papeeers

The MAME team are Gods, and whatever they decide is alright by me. OK?
No, but really - I can't be arsed to maintain a list of the settings for 1500 different games, so I have little alternative than to say that the default settings are the standards use. If you want to maintain a list of settings which we all use, then that's OK (except that you would get a lot of argument about exactly what the settings should be), but it wouldn't be a fun thing to have to update for every single beta...
So what I say is - if paperboy just got easier, then exploit its new easiness, and if it got harder, then by all means play it using an old version of MAME with the easier default settings. It's a simple rule, it has its failings, but it's maintenance free for me, which is all that matters, right? :o)

I think it's obvious to use the settings that most of the game recordings are already in. Just because a mame default changes doesn't mean you can take advantage or be placed in a disadvantage now that the defaults change. It's kind of like UseNet, read a few articles, get used to the playing field, and then post a message in the same format as everyone else.

Why force everyone who's already got a score to "re-record" their scores just to try to beat your new easy default scores? And definitly, who is going to upload a harder setting score that will pale in comparison to the scores already up there?
