WE should say "shoot in PAL DV format"!!! thats what everyone is saying you should do. so what should all of us who have bought NTSC cameras do?? everyone says shoot in DV. Thats misleading! should we just use video projectors and cinalook? is there any market for us? should we after paying 4g's just dream about a PAL camera? Or does anyone think that the motion artifacts from NTSC to film will be exceptibal? All thoughts are very welcome.

If you have an NTSC camera then shoot in NTSC. Forget PAL. You can transfer to film and still get excellent results. Check out www.dvfilm.com for more transfer info. You just have to be aware of NTSC limitations and issues BEFORE you start shooting. Besides a compelling story is what will ultimately get you film or video recognized. Look at Blairwitch (crappy looking, but a good concept), or Kevin Smith's Clerks.

Yeah, what Jamie said. Of course there are technical limits - detailed industrial equipment shot in poor lighting and blown up just may not show details needed for instruction. But look at American grafitti, and many other films shot in special conditions - the ultimate clarity/sharpness is not always the ultimate issue. If ya got a good flick, just do it, and they will come.

In my experience, PAL is irrelevant once you get to DV. Look at a DV frame from firewire, and you will see that your camera is not performing at full DV resolution (525 lines). The XL1 and VX1000 are around 480 lines. If the CCD and lens can't get to NTSC levels, what good is using the same exact equipment in PAL format?

Personally, I shoot in NTSC with a 1.75x Kowa Anamorphic adapter lens intended for 16mm. Digitally I letterbox the image and gain 75% more vertical resolution. Consumer TVs can't even display all of the details that this shooting system of
