If you're looking for something to kick the depression meter into the suicidal range, I heartily recommend:

1) The Rapture 2) Little Odessa

both are pretty bleak films, but very good.

I am a really picky movie watcher... so if I say something is good, it must be pretty damn good. hahahah.

I really really really liked "A Simple Plan." Very good stuff.

to get the cheap movies: Have you seen Boxing Helena? Bizarre bizarre but entertaining film. How about for shameful indulgence: Rush Hour? I liked that movie, and I'm not a Jackie Chan kinda person. Hmmm.... Phenomenon with John Travolta is a good one if you haven't seen it...kind of a love story with a philosophical twist...

Ok. There are 3 movies that you can never go wrong with.

1> Clerks. Kevin Smith is the God of humor. 2> Mallrats. Kevin Smith is cheezy, but the story attatches to Clerks. 3> Chasing Amy. Again- stories attaching, and really funny male bashing.

You may have seen these, but they are just as good the 4th or 5th time around I swear!

True Romace. My all time favorite movie. Written by Quentin Tarrentino before he was "The" Quentin Tarrentino. It's got everything you could want in a movie. Car chases, love stories, burnouts, mobsters, drug lords (Gary Oldman kicks ass), hallucinations of Elvis, coke-addicted movie producers, a pink cadillac, a girl named Alabama, an explanation of why Sicilians are half black, and comic books! Oh yeah, it's got Christopher Walken too!

I *loved* THE RAPTURE. Very interesting, thought-provoking film. For anyone who hasn't seen it--Mimi Rogers plays this hedonistic telephone operator who finds God and becomes a born-again Christian. Life goes along merrily, she marries (David Duchovny) and has a child but then things begin to go wrong and God ends up demanding an Abraham-like sacrifice from her.

Haven't seen Little Odessa but will run out and rent it soon (I figure if you liked THE RAPTURE...)

"A Murder of Crows" was very good, I agree with the suggestion about "A Simple Plan" also.
