Fast Company Article by Bill BerningHow To Wow An Audience Every Time by Curtis Sittenfeld
If you want to capture people's attention during a presentation or while chatting with a stranger, you have to give a great performance. Actress Martha Burgess claims this is what is needed to be effective in sales and leadership.
In being a good leader you need to create excitement and reduce the anxiety of your idea. your energy level must increase to create excitement and that makes you visable and gives you presence.
Ms. Burgess teaches reasing your energy level in her class. To increase your energy level, Ms. Burgess uses a trigger exercise. You must imagine an object like a thermometer or a speedometor as a trigger for your personal stimulus. then five times a day for six weeks, phisically raise your energy level by, for example, running n place until you are breathing heavily. Ath that point, stop abruptly, shut your eyes and focus on your trigger. After six weeks the response will be so ingrained that you will be able to energize yourself by focusing on your trigger point.
Ms. Burgess also teaches her clients to read an audience. She claims there are three learning lines people receive information. They are mental, emotional, and physical.
When addressing people that have a mental learning line you should speak witha clear argument and plenty of facts. Emotional people need or like storytelling. They must feel personally involved. If you want to engage physical people, you need to get them out of their chairs and involved in an activity.
My opion of this article was that it was very general in nature and did not offer the information I thought it would provide. When it talked about the three learning types, it never gave any clue as to how to recognize the three types. I wonder how you do a presentation when you have all three types in an audience?
I thnig a person must raise their envergy level when talking in front of an audience and when meeting someone new. The extra excietement captures their attention but you must address the tapoic in depth to keep their attention.
The only value this article had for me was a reminder to raise energy levels. If it would have addressed how to identify the three learning types it would have been beneficial.
