Outdoor Ice Wall Construction informationgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Mountaineering : One Thread |
Seeking information on constructing an outdoor ice wall. This wall will be used for both the continuation training of Search and Rescue Technicians of the C.A.F. and a northern community climbing club. The location is Goose Bay Labrador on a NATO Low Level Fighter Base. My question expands to the options of how to construct it ie. build a structure from scratch or utilize an existing building (structurally sound 6 story hotel condemed for asbestos) and methods of watering the wall. I've sent a request to Entre Prises at www.ep-usa.com but could use advice from other avenues. Thank you... Dale

Hey Dale,I know the St Boniface section of the Alpine Club of Canada has their own free standing tower. It's made of there 70 foot hydro poles, covered in plywood and iced over.
You should be able to find their link through www.alpineclubofcanada.ca
I'm looking to make ice on the side of a quarry. Got any info to share? I heard there was something on the web under ice farming but haven't found anything yet.

Don't know if you're still looking for info on quarry ice, but a good contact is Dairy Land Expeditions in Appleton, WI. Call the Vertical Stronghold gym and ask for Paul. They have a website also.

Landscape architect Michael van Valkenburgh has been making ice walls for several years. He designed one that is now under construction in NYC at Teardrop Park (Battery Park area of lower West Side of Manhattan). He has a website that describes a couple of earlier ice walls.
