Picasso, our 6m old MC kitten is an absolute loverboy- we totally adore him and it's clear the feeling is mutual. However, both my husband and I work a full day and are often out at night. Picasso seems very content with his lifestyle but at times I feel he needs a little friend to play with. Eventhough we dote on him I guess it isn't the same as having a real mate. Also we've heard MC are social cats, used to living in packs. Can anyone tell us more about the need for a companion? Regards,

Hi I'd recommend you DO get a little pal for Picasso. As you are out all day, it would be nice for him to have a playmate. Although cats sleep a great deal out of every 24 hours (about 20 hours!!), he may be lonely when you are out. I assume you have had Picasso neutered by now as he is more than old enough. In my experience, neutered males get along well together so I would recommend you find a nice little boy kitty for him to play with. When you bring the new kitty home, keep him confined by himself in a room for at least a week, but make sure your new kitty and the existing one can smell each other under the door. Once you are sure they have got used to each other's smells (you will have both cats' smells on your clothes as you go between them) and that the new kitty appears healthy and has been checked out by your vet (preferably BEFORE you even bring him into your home), then you can open the door and let the new kitty explore more of the house (preferably keeping the existing kitty away in another room). When the new kitty feels comfortable with his new surroundings, let the existing kitty in to meet the new one. NEVER hold onto either cat when they are introduced to each other. Expect some hissing and running away (from either or both of them) and always be there during their encounters. When you cannot be there (like while you are at work or at night) put the new kitty back into his room alone. Only when you are absolutely sure the two guys get along well together can you leave them alone together while you are out of the room. Good luck!

Yes, do get him a companion! It takes a little care just at first, but you will have so much fun seeing them interact. A Maine Coon that is on its own for long periods can become a bit jumpy and less social and it would be a shame if your lovely boy got nervy.
