FIRST SETTLEMENT IN SAN FRANCISCOgreenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread |
I am under the impression that San Francisco was first settled by Russian imigrants in the 1800's. Can you advise?

San Francisco was founded by Spain in 1776, and up until the early 1820s its population was almost exclusively Spanish, Native-American, and Mestizo. Perhaps you're thinking of Fort Ross where the Russians established a trading post and fort, but that site is more than a hundred miles north of San Francisco.
