I'm going to get some unexpected money next month (woo-hoo!) and want to get a good basic studio light set that doesn't a fortune (between $500 and $600) and that can be added on to. I was looking through Shutterbug ads, and I don't have a clue about the reputations of the various manufacturers. I'd be using it primarily for portraits, some still lifes. I do know what I'll need in terms of barndoors and snoots and reflectors and all the important add-ons. I was thinking of getting a 2-3 light strobe set with stands, but I'd consider hot lights if someone has a good argument for those. Any recommendations? Thanks very much for you

I don't know too much about price, but Novatrons are reliable and well made. Should be able to get a good used set for your price range. I would try to get the most power I could.
