I adopted a cat from the local shelter that appears to be a purebred Maine Coon and he has lots of ear infections. Is this a common trait? Is there something I should be doing to avoid these?

No, in my fairly long experience with Maine Coons I would not say that recurring ear infections are a common problem. In fact, none of my MC cats has ever had an ear infection. What does your vet have to say about this problem? I hope your cat is an indoor cat.....certainly, every type of infection is MUCH more prevalent amongst cats which go outside. I hope your vet can sort out the problems for your poor kitty for ever. Good luck.
