Thousands of litres of sewage have spewed into the Maribyrnong River downstream of Cordite Avenue in Melbourne's west.
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) warned people today not to swim or fish in the river, following the discharge of 38,000 litres of sewage.
EPA chairman Brian Robinson said more than five kilometres of the river had been affected.
'It seems as if there has been a power failure at a pumping station and the sewage has spewed into the Maribyrnong,' Mr Robinson said.
The EPA is working with City West Water to rectify the problem, but the warning will remain until further notice.
