I'm sure I have a MC female...She's always doing weird things that leaves me laughing..the newest is with her toy pompom ball..she's always carrying it to her water dish, dropping it in, then carrying it to another room for later.. the ball is always soaking wet, but she seems to love it that way.. does anyone know why?? Why do they love water so much? Thanks..

I don't know why they do that.....but they sure do! I don't think anyone will be able to really answer that question....until we can "speak cat"!! Two of my MCs love fresh water so much that they will barely drink water unless it is running from a tap, and two more love to dump any toys (particularly wads of paper or balls) into water bowls. Go figure!!

I never thought that I would see the day when I would find myself standing in the bathroom and using my hair dryer to dry my maine coon's pet mouse! He has ME trained! He is always dropping his toys into the water.

He loves the tap water and always uses his paw to pat the water bowl before he drinks out of it.

Mine doesn't put things into her water, but LOVES ice cubes to bat around the room. She also is addicted to the bathtub faucet when it is dripping. We got her a rock/water fountain for Christmas from a department store here and she LOVES it too. She hardly drinks out of her water bowl any more - just the fountain and she's very gentle with it - not trying to bat at the rocks, just gently lapping the water. Very funny and cute! (She's not spoiled or anything :) )

I also do not know why they like to play in the water. I have 2 MC's who splash big time! When I put fresh water in their bowls, they splash most of the water out and then procede to lick their paws. Are they cleaning their paws or drinking? I have big plastic trays under their water bowls and large towels under the trays to catch the water!

My silver MC boy just loves to bat at the water especially in the toilet. He's intriged by watching the flushing process and when it stops, he'll reach down and hit at it. I think he just likes moving water so I was interested in the response about a fountain for drinking. I started surfing the web and found the Drinkwell Pet Fountain. It is made for drinking as it has filters to filter and aerate the moving water.

I've been using bottled water because I don't trust tap water. If I won't drink it, I won't give to my animals. If anyone is interested, the web site is http://noahspets.com. It's not cheap, however, my baby isn't spoiled either. It'll be fun watching him with the fountain because loves to reach out and touch running water.

well, after the fountain idea, I had to rush out and buy a table top water fountain...my MC loves it.. as soon as I get home from work, she runs over to the fountain waiting for me to turn it on..It's hilarious. So, thank you for that great idea..unfortunately, she still drops her toys in the other water dish.. :-) jennifer

We have four cats, including a 6 mo old Maine Coon kitten. For the past 3 years they have been drinking from a floor fountain that I purchased from Feng Shui Warehouse for about $120. It is large, sturdy and has no rocks that they can move around. The pump has been great, it has run 24/7 since I got it. Also nice that it can sit on the floor where i can control the mess more easily. They also love running water anywhere in the house.

We got our drinking fountain. Shadow just loves to play with the running water and tries to bite at the fountain. After several attempts at biting with no results, he attacks it. Having had to clean up the floor several times, I've finally put a towell under the bowl. Still, sometimes when I get up in the a.m., I find the towell is damp and the wall behind the fountain is splashed and wet. I think he is having way too much fun during the night when everyone else sleeps.

well...now I come home to find three pompom balls in the water dish, all soaking up the water so that our other cat hardly has any left to drink.. If they're not ALL in the water dish, at least one of the balls is in the bottom level of the fountain...I crack up laughing everytime I see them there, but I wish someone could answer the question: WHY??

Bear (affectionately known as Bearda)adores water. His favorite toy is a rabbit fur mouse, known as "mousie". Mousie goes everywhere with him. If it is "dinner time" Mousie eats too. Everyday when i get home from work, I find Mousie in either the food bowl or water dish. When guests come to our home, he welcomes them with his water soaked mouse. Often frightening our guests. Since the day we have brought him home, I have not taken a shower alone. Everyday he accompanies me in the bathroom and gets very mad if I dont let him play in the tub. If you even walk by the door to the bathroom, he starts screaming....runs into the bathroom jumps in the tub and tries to move the knobs. I have often left an inch in the bottom of the tub for him to play in. He just thinks it is the best thing next to Mousie of course. I have owned many cats throught out my life but never have come across one like Bear.

We found a neat, less expensive way to make a fountain, that's easy to clean. Took a small metal tub, the shape of a horse watering trough (oval, available at plant nurseries). Filled it about 1 inch with smooth rocks, then set a small underwater pump (with an adjustable output valve) in it and put a large rock next to the pump for the water to trickle onto (which saves splashing and noise.) The girls like it best when the water comes out smoothly and they can lap at it. Cleaning, which was difficult with a store-bought desktop fountain, is easy. Just set the pump and large rock on a rag on the table, and take the tub to the sink. We use a shower filter, which makes the water taste good and removes chlorine, heavy metals, and alkalinity
