cleaning milking machine

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

The Countryside article on vinegar mentioned a lady who cleaned her machine with vinegar. Does anyone else use it? Do you use white or cider? I just started milking with an old converted cow machine and have hard water and I don't want it to get milkstone. I want to stay away from chemical cleaners if I can. If someone has any directions for cleaning please let me know what I can use. The "white vs. cider" issue has me confused. Thank You! Judi

I don't use a milking machine but have milkstone occasionally on my stainless steel buckets, strainers and jars. I use white vinegar straight from the jug, scrub with a brush or plastic scrubber, rinse and wash as usual. It is doing as good a job as the commercial milkstone remover I formerly used and much cheaper and safer.
