Hello, It is me back again I have another question this morning about the mother goat. She is doing real well with the babies (had 3) eating, drinking, active. Mother that is. When I went down this morning to check in on the crew, she had a large amount of mucous mixed with blood on her tail. She doesn't have anything coming from vagina just on her tail. I am sooo....green. Any feed back?? Thanks Karole

Karole, congratulations on the triplet kids, hope they were does! A small amount of mucous type discharge mixed with dark blood is normal for a doe after kidding. If the discharge should turn bright red and get heavy ie run down her legs, then you would have a problem. as long as she passed the afterbirth[s] and is eating, drinking, and bright-eyed and bushy tailed she is doing fine. Aren't baby goats fun? karen

Also keep in mind"or nose" there shouldn't be any foul smell from the discharge either .That would be the sign of an infection .Sounds like your doing fine enjoy!

Hi All, Everything is looking and smelling alright (gross). I feel better now. It is pretty today and the babies are out playing and oh this is fun. No one could've told me how good this farm life feels. My boys all have colds, but told me that they would check for me about mama goat (Sunny) I reassured them that this was a job that I should take care of. They are learning so much. So much more than the city ever taught them. Have great days and stayed tuned, I am sure I'll be back. Karole

Karole, she can have this discharge (just like you had after your kids) for a couple of weeks, and it can come and go. This would be a great time to worm your doe also. The hormones that cause labor and delivery can also activate the arrested larva in her to become much more active. This is a great time along with just before you breed her again this late summer to worm her. I use Valbazen Drench because we know that there is a 36 hour milk withdrawl time in which we feed the milk to goat babies but not to humans. We use 6cc per 100 pounds (did you get your weight tape yet). We do use Ivermectin 1% at 2cc per 100pounds (it is syringed out of the bottle and then remove the needle and syringe in mouth) it is obsorbed into the mucous mumbranes this way and through research at Texas A&m in Austin we know that this is the only way in which Ivermectin will kill stomach worms. Injection's of Ivermectin work well for Lice control. We don't use Ivermectin on milkers because it has an unknown milk withdrawl time.. Are you going to disbud your kids? Maybe we can all talk about that and vaccinations next. Good luck Vicki McGaugh

HI!!!!!!The discharge is normal from the sounds of it. Should it become nasty smelling or bloddy, etc. then there would be concern. And I agree, this is a good time to worm goats too. Most of ours recently kidded and we will be worming this weekend. Good luck and enjoy!!
