What would be the highest resolution I would need, if I am only going to view the photos on my my 15 and 17 inch monitor, will not be printing photos

Depends on the monitor resolution you are using. If you are using a 600X800 resolution on your monitor, you can get away with a 600X800 image. Likewise with a 1024X768 resolution. HOwever the larger the resolution for a given image, the more detail you will see. So there is a tradeoff

Monitors display one screen pixel for one image pixel. Images with a lot of pixels will appear larger, but not more detailed on a monitor. Digicams with more than 1024 X 768 (or 640 X 480 on some monitors) will provide images larger than the screen and it will be necessary to scroll to see the entire image unless you set the image size for less than 100%. If you're sure you won't use the camera for printing, 640 X 480 should satisfy you.
