I have an old type F-1; I have read somewhere(?) that removing the base plate to fit the power winder/motor drive can mean the film in the camera gets fogged.(i.e. you can only attach/detach the winder when there is no film in the camera). I can't find a definitive answer as to whether this is true, Anyone out there know for certain?

The Hove Canon Classics book says that film will be fogged by removing the camera baseplate and installing the winder/motor. If the F-1 is like the F-1N, then this occurs on the cartridge side as there is some clearance around the film rewind shaft. The takeup side seems to be better sealed.

Mark, I've been using an F-1 with motor for 18 years and haven't fogged a roll of film yet. If light is going to get into an old F-1 it will be at the takeup end, as there is no power rewind feature and the resulting mechanical connection at the supply end of the camera as there is on the "New" F-1. The best insurance of course, would be to attach or remove the winder when the camera is empty.
