Hungary bans use of Tisza water

Hungary has banned the use of water from the Tisza River after the second pollution spill blamed on neighbouring Romania in a month.

The Hungarian Prime Minister has also called for pressure on Romania to sign up to international environmental accords.

In the latest spill, some 20,000 tons of mud laced with heavy metals reached Hungary, after heavy rains and melting snow burst the dyke of a reservoir at a mine in northern Romania.

The incident came after a mine partly-owned by an Australian company in the same region spilt 100,000 cubic metres of cyanide-laced sludge into the Danube river system.
