How would you do these legs (from SLOC day two)?

This map shows the first two legs from day two on the Red course at the SLOC B-meet.

First two legs....lots of booms

A lot of people made mistakes on the first two legs on the second day. How would you do these legs? If you ran at the event, how did you do them?

First control: attack point of fence corner, so rough compass down the hill. Upon arrival at the fence corner, it didn't look like such a good choice -- still a ways to go. More precise compass, with vague pace count and looking for features along the way. The light green was noticable different vegetation. Second control: plan to go to hill, run along green, pace count, then take a left. failed at this. Probably went too far. Searched around and gradually made my way back up the slope in a zig-zaggy manner. Saw Gale Teschendorf, who told me the trail was about 10 meters to the north (uphill). Ran to the trail and tried my plan again, this time using the features as well. Crossed the long ditch, about 100 meters later, ran through the two very short ditches (just to the right of the control circle) and took a bearing into the control. Of course, as I arrived, Gale was just leaving.

Fritz narrowly beat me to writing a response to the last question. I'll see how I fare this time!

1. Immediately I see this control could be trouble and a straightish route is sensible. I would head down the reentrant (or beside it?) that is just south of the straight line going downhill. At the bottom or near the stream junction I would head towards the control, to the left of it if anything. The ditches should stand out above other things on the hillside.

2. This looks even harder if because the visibility might be low. I would run just north of the line through the white, particularly to see the small reentrants ~100 m before the control.
