would the external flash synch on the 990 trigger non NIkon flashes units? is it, or can it be adapted, to standard flash synch terminal and how would the camera read the exposure is there "TTL" type of flash exposure..my interest is in adapting to medical imaging where the flash aparatus is already in place and can't be changed .........Thanks!

We do not recommend the use of non Nikon flash units with the 990. You may use an SK-E900 adapter with the 990 and an AS-10 (Hot shoe to PC sync) for studio lighting.

There is a risk of back voltage from other flashes-this cannot be protected and therefore could hurt your Coolpix.

The TTL system is actually based on the TTL principal-but you cannot take a direct read off the film (CCD)plane of a 990/950/900/800/700 so a read has to be taken next to the lens of how much light reaches the lens-and through TTL calculations the Nikon speedlight (internal or external or both) can be cut off when there is enough light hitting the subject.
