Is the material on the front of the 950 lens, glass or plastic?

Does it function as a lens element or is it there only to protect the lens itself, which moves in and out and would be subject to dirt, etc.?

Is this material UV absorbing? It would seem logical to me.

By the way, I enjoy my 950 tremendously, and have a 990 on order.
