Acid shortage hits Zambian copper tailings plant

MAR 20, 2000, M2 Communications - Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) says copper production at the Nchanga tailings leach plant in Zambia has been hit by a serious acid shortage.

According to ZCCM, the shortage is due to technical problems at Nchanga's regular acid suppliers, Nkana Acid and First Quantum's Bwana Mkubwa Mining. Because of the shortage, the Nchanga plant only produced 1,565mt of copper in February against the official target of 4,500mt.
