Title: 9 made ill by chemical leak

A chemical leak at a South Side company sickened at least nine people Wednesday. Firefighters were called about 6 a.m. to Stampede Meat Inc., 4551 S. Racine, where anhydrous ammonia had leaked from a cold-storage facility, said Will Knight, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

Four Chicago police officers, four employees and a bystander inhaled ammonia fumes and were taken to hospitals for treatment, then released, officials said. Police blocked traffic for about two hours between 43rd and 47th on Racine.
