Anyone heard of Scandinavian Ridgeback goats?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I was recently told of 400 lb. goats called Scandinavian Ridgeback's. They reportedly originated in Finnland in the 1700's and are being sold to boost the size of current meat goats.

I have never heard of them but what comes to mind is birthing and breeding problems. That's a big difference in size.It will be interesting to see what everyone has to say.

Nope, me neither! Not that they are not in Finnland, but I kinda doubt that they are here in the U.S., we usually here something when a new breed is out of quarantine, (like the boers, embryoes) or the Golden Gurnseys semen. But then who knows what a private individual is doing, keep us posted. Vicki

Good alpines can get past 300 lbs sometimes,I recently saw a doe that was over 200 lbs at 10 years old! There is a site called Saanendoah- try searching for it,they have a link on that site that takes you to a place with all the world's breeds of goats, many of which I've never heard of,and you can look at a picture of the breed and read about them. If there was such a breed that would be where I would try to find out about it.

Rex, Ever heard of Sidney Chinsucker? He was a Huge Nubian buck, and one of my favorite Nubians, He weighed at least 350 pounds. I had one of his grand-daughters, she was my foundation doe. But I like the old big meaty Nubians. Never heard of the Scandinavian Ridgeback but anything is possible. karen

I have not heard of them either. Speaking of big Alpines... we raise Alpines. We have a French herd sire who's sire was over 300 pounds. At 1 and a half yrs ours is close to 250 pounds.

I have come to the conclusion that this may be a Hoax. A Ranch in Iowa sells them for $25,000 each and wants the money in advance. They couldn't remember any past buyers that could be checked with for references. Of the three pictures I saw of the goats, each one looked different. Everything from Nubian to Saanen. Lots of other conflicting info was given by the ranch including that these goats had Mountian Goats bred into the bloodline. Unbelievable! Mountian goats are goat/antelope's and not able to cross breed to domestic goats. Thank for all the responses.
