Breathing concerns

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

Well my Maine Coon is 8 months old and she seems to have problems with her breathing at times, she is healthy as I have had her to vet I am showing her now, but she seems to get stuffy nose at times, wonder if this is normal or not. The vet never noticed anything wrong with her at her visits maybe it's just me????

Just a thought, I'm not sure where you live but if you heat your home with forced hot air you may have a dry condition. This can cause a variety of respiratory problems both in pets and humans. You may want to check the humidity of your home. According to a standards chart that I am looking at; if the house temperature is between 68 and 72 degrees F, humidity should be ~35 to 55%. This varies slightly from chart to chart but personally if I was down in the 30% range I would purchase a humidifier. Helps to keep dust down too. If you don't have one, you can purchase a cheap humidity/temperature gauge from any home supply store.

Suggest you discuss Colici virus. Unfortunately we had a maine who had a similar problem which we lost as a result of pneumonia secondary to being infected with Colici. Our Vet informs us there is no test to determine but perhaps yours might discuss warning symptoms. Don't wish to alarm but if we had taken ours in one day earlier we could have saved. Hope this is not related to yours.

However, if you purchased yours from a breeder in the greater Atlanta area we would like to talk to you. Good Luck
