First I'd like to tell everyone that this is just a great site for us photography students to learn more. Now my ?. Can anyone tell me what would be the best photography magazine to subscribe to. I love to do B & W of children. Thanks, Carmen

There is certainly no one correct answer to this one! I like Photo Techniques, but they only publish every couple months, and it might be ages before they happen to do something on your particular subject. OTOH, they cater to B&W and also have a web site- phototechniques.comI'd pay lots of attention to non-photo magazines to see what others are doing. Any magazine that features kids, advertising with kids, and even magazines for kids, is bound to have new and interesting work that can inspire you.

Ditto for "Photo Tecniques". I get "Outdoor Photographer" as well. Between the two I prefer "Photo Tecniques" it is closer to my philosophy of photography than "Outdoor Photographer". There are some interesting more mainstream images in OP but PT wins for me.

I like American Photo and it usually contains a lot of black and white work. It comes out every two months. If you don't subscribe, I recommend at least getting the curent issue, the May/June issue. Some good stuff in it.

In some ways the worst magazines for photography inspiration and examples of fine imagery are "photo" magazines. I agree with the above suggestion to seek out magazines which feature photographs of the subjects you want to photography: fashion=Elle, wildlife=National Wildlife, people and cultures=National Geographic; travel=Travel, and so on. Also, as suggested, look for on-line magazine sites, and the Photo Technique site is wonderful. (I've just been trying to get the URL up but traffic is heavy so I'll have to post it later). Also, look at B&W magazine...not about kids, but good info on black and white photography.

Also worth a look are Camera Arts (6 times a year) and Photo Insider (quarterly) if you have access to a well-stocked newsstand or photographic shop. Photo Techniques has an excellent back-issue service and runs an index most months. I learn more by studying magazines in my fields of interest and puzzling out how the photos were done.

Aperture, Blind Spot, DoubleTake. Vogue if Ellen von Unwerth is in it. Most of the other publications are way too conservative and don't try to show anything that hasn't been done 1000 times.

To see examples of great black and white photography, my favorites areand
B & W (not the same a B+W, which is an Australian fashion mag.)

I second the LensWork suggestion. Thoughtful writing and excellent images from lesser known artists.

There are very few good photography magaaazines out there anymore - I like Photo Techniques and also like Vanity Fair, Natl. Geographic and Martha Stewart Living Magazines for examples of good photography. The trick is to get inspired so whatever it takes!
