Wow! those are old cartoons, I mean the original Gumby.
-- Anonymous, April 20, 2000
As a former art and animation major, I'd like to point out that Gumby was not animated, it was claymation, like Celebrity Deathmatch on MTV, which for some odd reason has stopped playing music videos... anybody else find that strange?

Cartoon or claymation, Gumby just scares me...*Hides in the closet*

An anime IS a japanese cartoon such like Outlaw star, Tenchi Muyo, Cowboy bebop, Evangelion and so on. They are animated in a special way and no, Rugrats, South Park and the other one you said ain't an anime. Oh, and if anyone knows, I don't know how to pronounce anime?
-- Anonymous, March 02, 2003
Anime is like you said, Japanese Animation (Sometimes called Japanimation) In Anime, ("Animal" without the al on the end, and an "Ay" sound on the end) Emotion is exaggerated a lot, this is usually accomplished by extremely revealing eyes. If you'll notice, in most anime, the eyes are really big, and the mouths are small. This is to put emphasis on the eye-expressions, and it usually works quite well. Anime also usually airs as a T.V. episode, or an OVA or OAV movie. It is different form Manga though. Manga is more like Anime magazines, or novels. Hope that cleared a few things up...

yea the eyes cam from the early cartoons we had like mikey mouse, and stuff like that, that really influinsed them, so that is why the anime eyes are so big
-- Anonymous, April 20, 2003
Anime is a type of cartoon, done by Japanese animators.Really? that's where the big eyes came from? Mickey Mouse??? I thought they were drawing Americans, and Americans have really big eyes compared to Japanese, until I read in a magazine that the eyes were for emphasizing emotions! I like the big eyes, but sometimes they REALLY exaggerate. Take Jeanne for example! I can't stand that! The eyes cover the entire face!

well who in the world wouldnt know what anime is if they are on anime thread?
-- Anonymous, June 10, 2003
...*cries* ;_;

yup.

Big eyes are especially known to have come from Bambi, because Osamu Tezuka, the father of manga, first worked for Disney on Bambi. It's where he got the idea that if animals were intelligent, they would try to communicate with people, but since they could not talk, they would need to communicate through their eyes so the eyes needed to be emphasized. You can see this directly in his Kimba the White Lion, and it carried over into his other works like Astro Boy and Black Jack.

I hate to be the one to tell you this Aaron but anime is the japanese word for animation so technically scooby doo, south park, and rugrats are indeed ANIME
-- Anonymous, August 05, 2003

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2003

No american cartoons are NOT animes. Animes are Japanese animations, so animations from Japan are animes, ones from America aren't. The two are both animations but different catagoies thats why theres animes sections and cartoons sections at places there not together (or atleast they shouldn't be) Its kinda hard to make an american anime if anime means Japanese animation. Cartoon is the term used for american animations and anime is the term used for Japanese animation. The two aren't the same.
