Pine Mountain -- The Environmental Protection Agency has notified Pine Mountain and the Callaway Gardens resort of two recent sewage spills into area waterways.
The violations concern Pine Mountain's sewage treatment plant, which spilled untreated waste into Turkey Creek. That spill was discovered March 29. About a month earlier, the state Environmental Protection Division cited the city's treatment plant for operational problems.
Environmental officials said it will be difficult to ascertain how much sewage was leaked into the creek.
"It appears it has been going on sometime based on the condition of the stream," said Robert Moore, an EPD environmental specialist in Albany. "There are indications the quality of the stream has been degraded."
At Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, officials were sent a notice of a wastewater treatment violation after state officials discovered solids escaping into Mountain Creek from the resort's waste water treatment plant in late March.
