I want to start a project that will end as graduation gifts for some friends. Is there any way to make a print with layering several images on top of each other successfully without using digital imaging?

Certainly. One simple technique is called "multiple exposure", and involves taking more than one photograph on a single piece of film, or printing from more than one negative on to a single piece of photographic paper.
