How to build a lime pit to dipose of dog wastegreenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
How do you go about constructing a lime pit to dipose of dog waste, in light of the fact we can`t compost it like we do our goat and horse manure?

It will compost eventually, given enough vegetation to dilute it. Try adding worms as well, once it's started to compost. It's not necessarily useless then either - you could use it on woodlot or orchard (particularly if you boil windfalls before feeding to stock).

Will this also work for cat waste? We've got a bunch of indoor, litter-box using cats and I hate just dumping the waste. Any ideas for putting the litter material to good use? Would be high in nitrogen (urine), I think.Thanks.

I put my cat waste in a defferent compost bin, add lots of hay, and I add the bacteria that you flush, to keep a heathy septic, works fine. I havent had to do anything in over 3 years. I guess in another 3 I may have to start another, but that can wait till then

For a lime pit, check your library for outhouse pit care. Basically you'd dig a hole (keep covered so nobody falls in), put in the waste, sprinkle it sprinkle lime and/or wood ashes over it every now and then, add some dirt if you want. You can add vegetation and other compostable stuff if you've got extra. As for the used litter, we dump it where we've got erosion. It tends to pack down well. The house cats are much less likely to have parasites as compared to the barn cats and the barn cats are already going outside. We also put the litter in the grove. Gerbil
