My cat has a cronic gum infection where the gums are red and his breath is bad, the vet said this is not unusual and he will likely always have it, however, he builds up a lot of tarter and his co-operation with the tooth brush extends only to eating the toothpaste. Any ideas?

I agree that you should find another vet. Has your vet recommended having your cat's teeth cleaned under anesthesia? Those gums need to be taken care of fast. Also, stick with the toothbrushing. I have tiny toothbrushes that I use on my cats. Your cat may not like it at first, but he'll gradutlly get used to it, especially if you use a chicken-flavord toothpaste made especially for cats and dogs. If those gums aren't taken care of, infection could go into other parts of your cat's body and/or his teeth will start to fall out.

I just want to add to what Susan said. Bad gums can cause heart disease and should be taken seriously.
