I'm not embarrassed by anything in my collection, though I readily admit certain things are crap.

I figure there's an internal "cool points" or "indie cred meter" system going. Buy one Modern Lovers CD, and you are allowed 1 Leslie Gore CD. Buy some Massive Attack and you can 'forget' to send Everclear back to BMG after you flail on returning the 'no thanks' card. See how it works? Buy "Let's Dance" and "Never Let Me Down" or any collection with "The Laughing Gnome" and repent later with "Buddha of Buburbia", "Outside" or "Low". :) Support your local bands and indie artists and you get to buy some commercial pabulum in trade.

Generally, though, I am given the most 'crap' items in my collection, as a joke. I have a Spice Girls CD. I haven't ever played the whole thing, but I won't toss it out. I have started buying a lot of things based on the opinion of critics whom I have agreed with in the past, too--thus discovered Muse, Myssouri, Rialto, Merrymakers, Dandy Warhols, Nick Drake, Nan Vernon, Kinky Machine, 801 Live, David Werner, etc. and I'm v. happy with all of those 'discoveries'. I never would have heard any of them on the radio stations here! It would, at the least, have been a fluke.

God, I have vinyl albums I bought or was given as a teen, while I was finding out what my tastes was. Lots of 80's stuff remains because it makes me happy, not because I think it's necessarily all excellent quality music. I bought a 15 CD set from Rhino and get shit for it all the time, but *I* like it.

Like I said, checks and balances. If I want to keep the crap, fine. It's not hurting anyone. Some people think it's the best music in the world (scary thought)--some of the 'crap' is someone's all-time favorite artist/band. Even when it's hard for me to relate, I respect that. People get amused when they root through my collection. I'm also a recipient of a lot of vinyl donations, so I have, like, every Black Sabbath record ever, none of which have ever been played on my turntable. But hey, they're availble should I get the urge. I guess I need to give my ears some good stuff once in a while or I get ashamed. ;)

Clemmie - Barry White is cool. Shut up. Stand proud. And get some action (how can you NOT with Barry on the box?).

My partner is a closet Britney Spears fan. He Loves "hit me baby one more time" - and his sister (damn) bought him the cd when it first came out. (This sister, I'll have you know is my age - 30 - and loves *nsync). Now, heavens, he's just told me that he's embarassed to say hi likes her new single he's been hearing on the radio (I think its called something mature like "oops i did it again". I'm considering leaving him, in the fear that he'll buy the cd and play it at one of our parties, since everyone will assume its mine, not his. *sigh*

I'm embarrased that I like Mariah Carey - though her last cd blew. Her oldest stuff - especially balads, I like, but I realize and respect the fact that it makes many people cringe. Thats okay.

Um - I think that is about it as far as my pathetic taste in music (and boyfriends - lol).

Oh, and right, I like Madonna. I don't get embarrassed about this one; I took so much flak that I've almost gotten defensive about it.

And, my husband? Our musical tastes just don't coincide very well at all, but I don't let that stop me. I mean, he doesn't like Ella Fitzgerald! Or, well, anything else I particularly like. We agree on things like New Order, TMBG, and NIN, but he typically doesn't like my favorite stuff.

There is nothing wrong with liking Wagner. Yeah, he was a shit as a person, but he did some great music. So what if only about six people in the world will admit to liking it? The Bayreuth Wagner festival in Germany is always packed. So there.

And there is *absolutely* nothing embarrassing about liking Barry White.

However, there is a *lot* of embarrassment involved with liking ABBA, and I am hanging my head in shame. I sing along with the songs. My only excuse is that I was very young when they were around, and it must have affected my brain.

I'm an MTV groupie these days - I know Britney's lyrics better than she does. But I haven't bought her album - that's just wrong.

However, I have a great CD of NZ music at the moment - lots of Maori songs and hakas. And everybody else who listens to it thinks it's dreadful, but that's just because they don't appreciate quality. They think I should feel guilty, but I don't.

However, I'm ashamed to admit a fondness for The Sound of Music.

Don't even get me started. I own Britney's CD and I LOVE her new song. I own the new *NSYNC CD. I have several Spice Girls CDs (including imports). I also have Journey's Greatest Hits and am eagerly anticipating seeing REO Speedwagon and Styx in concert in a couple of weeks.

Am I ashamed? No. Should I be? Probably. But again, I agree with the theory that you can balance out the bad music with the good. In front of me right now I have CDs by Moby, David Bowie, Ben Folds Five, Otis Redding, XTC, the Chemical Brothers and Liz Phair. So I don't consider myself a total music loser, just someone with a weakness for cheesy pop music.

The only thing I am embarrassed about is the fact that after telling anyone who will listen over the past two years how much Third Eye Blind sucks, I actually like their new song. That I *will* hang my head in shame over.

Gosh - there's nothing embarrassing about liking Wagner - you should be proud of yourself for knowing who he is! Die Walk|re is just about the most kickass dramatic opera of its time - there is nothing more entertaining than a bunch of screaming, incestuous, sword and magic helmet, four-hours-long action! Bring it ON!

Now Britney, that's embarrassing - although, whenever that "Crazy" single of hers comes on - and I have the same confession to make about *NSync's "Bye Bye Bye" - I do a little car dancing.

I am not embarassed, but sometimes must vigorously defend, the fact that I, not just like, but LOVE old country music. Dolly, George, Hank Sr., Willie...love them. Look, I am an opera diva as well - don't make me kick your ass for making fun of me! So what if my cd changer looks like this: REM, Maria Callas, Lit, Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, No Doubt, Blink 182, The Andrews Sisters.

Oh, John Allen Cameron. I don't care what you say, everybody taps their feet to "Lord of the Dance", and "Mary Mac" rocks.

I also have a few of those collections of great classical music with schmaltzy titles like Classic Love, and while this could be perceived as cultured of me, I think buying great classical for $2.99 at Walmart just doesn't cut it. Though perhaps by the points system my Soshtakovich and Planets and Mozart's Requiem albums make up for this?

Holly - you are gonna want to be my new best friend - my brother is a production assistant in Toronto and he worked with Jordan on his video for that prince song (something "your man" - what was it again, Holiday??) Jen (Holiday - above - the NKOTB fan - lol) taped the "behind the video" episode on MTV that featured that video - my brothe r is in it.

Brother Bill says Jordan is a really nice guy. And he's had to deal with loads of talent in the business, so I guess that says something.

One of my favorite bands.... the MONKEES! (eh heh) they played their own instruments (after gaining control of their music), darnit! Everyone seems to be convinced otherwise.

Chicago... not that lame 80's stuff, but the cool 70's stuff full of horns and funky beats... eh heh...

I, too, love a pulsating techno beat. Great to drive to... though I turn it down when I pull up next to someone at a stoplight.

I also have a great fondness for TMBG, and... Weird Al. (hides head in shame)

I also own quite a few Japanese anime soundtracks...

To make myself sound a bit more normal, let me say I also love the Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah McLachlan, Jars of Clay, the Supertones, and Harry Connick Jr., to name a few... I'm not completely eccentric. :D

Wow, I'm working on my music-links page, and I started it with "guilty pleasures"...

I'll top it off with the first Cheap Trick album... god, I love it. Y'know, there's a thin line between homage and satire, and this CD walks the high-wire on it... the first three Aerosmith albums (especially "Toys in the Attic")... and Led Zep: 2, 3, "houses of the holy" (the opening chords of "Song remains the same", and have you ever gotten REALLY DRUNK and danced to "The Ocean" at 3AM?)...physical graffitti (custard pie...mmmm). God - this is hard. This is something that I haven't even dared to admit to my SO. Most of my public faves that I proudly buy in full view of my peers fall squarely in the safe "alterna-stuff" camp, but damn napster! - I can now, uh, "temporarily preview before deleting" songs that I wouldn't purchase wearing a false beard, mustache and sunglasses.

Gulp - here goes. Britney's "Hit Me Baby" (an almost perfect pop ditty) and Mandy Moore's "Candy" both get my toes tapping. OK - I hate the little talking part in "Candy", but the chorus rocks. Man - that's sad. I am soooooooo lame. That makes me want to get all "Fight Club" on my own ass. Sure, other's just read that and say "I love those songs." - but it gets worse.

Ever heard of the yang to Britney's ying, the tails to her heads, the "crucify and burn" to her "oh baybah, baybah"... Kittie? Since downloading "Brackish", that song has forced my to locate the "Repeat" button on each of my many Winamp skins. Thrash Metal at it's best by a group of Canadian high school girls. Someone *please* tell my that they were all held back 5 or 6 years.

So there is my guilty pleasure. I'm being sucked in by jailbait rock. I've never felt any guilt in having both Korn and Tori in my 5 disk changer simultaneously (diversity is good) - but this, this part of me that thinks "cool song and she's hot too" - then remembering that the object of my admiration just recently got her period - makes me feel like that sweaty, fat, unshaven 40-something pervo with the Charlie Manson eyes and terminal plumber's crack that your mom warned you about.

Dude, Quiet Riot rocks so much more than Air Supply. I don't even know how you can have those in the same sentence.

I was supposed to do a spoken word CD split with a hardcore punk band about a year ago and the secret hidden track was going to be me reciting the words to "Metal Health" frem memory, just because I can.

My whole music thing is wierd because of the zine, I get so much music to review and generally dislike 90% or more of it especially because it all sounds exactly the same. The funny thing is when I will get something to review, listen to it once or twice then discard it, forgetting all about it. Most of these are small label indie bands so I never hear about them after that initial review, but sometimes a piece of garbage comes back weeks or months or years later and get huge. Like Kittie. Damn they suck.

I guess my guilty pleasure is all of that Britney Spears, Christina Agiulara (sp) stuff. I couldn't tell any of them apart, but they've started playing it at the bowling alley, a mix tape one of the kids who works there made or something because it's always in the same order.

I used to hate that Genie in a Bottle song, but now I think it kicks ass.

This, mind, isn't counting my love of lounge/kitch music (I've laid claims to Gramma's Yma Sumac and Annette Funicello albums)... or my love of 70s Schlock (yes, that's me yodelling along with Karen Carpenter... don't bang on the walls, I know, I know!)... or my love of disco (around 1989 I was buying SNF on CD and telling everyone "No, really, it's gonna make a comeback!")... or my love of 80s synth-pop-

And I should add that Dwanollah made me a Spice Girls karaoke CD that kicks ass, and I HAVE listened to IT all the way through. The real thing paled in comparison, though. Haven't figured that out. (Less Spice vocals = better?)

YOu know you're old when you own the original music that you hear sampled in the latest hit. It all started with Vanilla Ice appropriating Queen/Bowie's Under Pressure...not that samples were invented by him, duh, but that's when it hit me I was getting to be too old.

BTW, I see that disco is considered bad. Again. So, is funk bad, or is it 'okay' for a little longer? I know people were suddenly saying it was cool again after Pulp Fiction, but that stuff goes in waves. It's probably uncool again. So what. Anyway, I never can keep all that stuff straight. (I play what I want, sure, but you might have to force me to listen to something in the top-40.)

8 track tapes! My favorite is Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic - the track changes in the middle of the title song!!! I bought the Village People's Greatest Hits CD so I can listen to it at work when I get depressed.

I used to be a *huge* New Kids on the Block fan. And I still have the CD's. And "Hangin Tough" is a good workout song.

I (thank god) no longer have the videos of them, though I once did. The worst part is that two of them recently came to town to promote new albums (Houston) and a whole group of girls my age (26) were outside the station screaming.

Every three or four months I feel compelled to haul out my collection. My dad loved him, and I grew up listening to him. When I'm sad, John and I wallow in self pity with a bottle of wine and the blinds drawn. When I'm happy, I bring my cd player outside and we work in my garden together and life is beautiful.

I'm not embarrassed about any music I like. Donny Osmond, Bay City Rollers, ABBA, Air Supply, The Carpenters, REO Speedwagon, Barry White, Poison, The Jackson Five, Barry Manilow *ok just a little embarrassed with that one*. The best vinyl record I have is Jeff Wayne's War of the World. Awesome 2 record set. Just a little plug for a group beginning on the road to success. From Indiana called The Almighty Remainders. for me, it would probably be a lot of DJ tapes that I got as a benefit of being friends with a lot of the Massive guys. I really like my DJ Disco Dave tape. and a lot of booty house.

My roomate and I also have a fathomless capacity for Madonna. Old Maddona. Like, "lucky star" and "material girl" territory.

I know!! I know!! I have to admit though that despite the fact that Headquarters is considered to be most "them", I like Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones LTD. best:) Between my sister and I, we have every single freakin' album they made, except for Pool It! Plus...we have all the episodes on tape...and their movie HEAD...and a couple of TV specials...but I am not ashamed!! I am proud of my Monkee fanness!

I, Assassin rocks. and in the live recording of Psycho, he's got this amazingly scary laugh.
sometimes i'm a closet placebo fan, but only because from far away brian molko is kinda cute.
and, hmm... i'm not really ashamed of my jazz/opera/classical music loves, because even if it isn't popular among my peers, it's darn good music. (darn good music?)
suede is a little embarassing. the music rocks, and he's got a great voice, but... "she live in a house/she stupid as a mouse" and "it's by the sea we'll breed" lyrics make it not something to be overly proud of.
any 80's goth-pop makes me way too happy. the Smiths have always been a secret love of mine. i refuse to be embarassed by the Cure though. i love the Cure! i love inconsistant capitalization too.

I am so not a country fan, but I love Trisha Yearwood. Damn, that girl can sing.

I haven't bought Christina Aguilera's cd, but I love the first 2 singles from it. I hate the new one she has out, though. I just hate that she has to try to be dolphin girl. Mariah Carey already has that job.

Yes, that whole "Sound of Music" thing I'll admit to. Also I do like Britney Spear's "Hit me baby..." but that and only that!!! And no one should ever be ashamed of Billie HOliday!! Hmm...thinking what else I can truly say I'm ashamed of? "Baby Got Back" is a great song, "PUff the Magic Dragon" will always have a place in my heart, and Marilyn Manson rocks my world. Enough for now, eh?
