Home made PhotoCDs ?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread |
I'm looking for a CD writer to store scanned images onto CD.This may be a dumb question, but is it possible to create 'PhotoCD's at home (a cd that can be read on both mac & pc in Kodak's format) ? If so does it require any particular type of writer or software or will most packages offer the facilities.
thanks in advance
Martin

Kodak pulled out a software called post it/arrange it (I believed) three years ago. That software can make PhotoCD but you need a thrid party driver for your CD ROM because Arrange it software reconized kodak CD ROM writer only. Good luck.

Martin, At work we regularly burn CD's for both Mac and PC use using Adaptec's Toast program and it works great. The choices are for Mac only, PC only or hybrid which can be read by both platforms. I don't have the foggiest idea what it costs. Hope that this helps and good luck. Since I have been burning CD's I have come to love their storage ability for the price.Fred

I'm not sure if Kodak license their PCD format for writing. I can read .PCD files in Photoshop5, but it doesn't let me save in that format. You might have to settle for TIFFs or JPEGs, which are still readable across platforms.

I found a great package called Photo Recall. You can learn more about it at www.photorecall.com. It's a great tool for managing photo albums but one of my favorite features is the ability to create a portable slide show. It's an exe file that launces a basic viewer. It uses the exact pictures you have on file, in fact if you use the option button in the executed show you can save a copy of your original JPG's just as they were originally. You can view full screen too. I use this to burn slide shows on CD to send to family up North (I'm in Fla.). If they want to print a picture for themselves, they can use the above option, print it and then delete the files since the CD is available for future use. It's VERY user friendly, inexpensive and may be what you're looking for.

martin, I have had great sucess creating 'photo cd's' using adaptec easy cd creater (ver 4 is the new version). It is bundled with a program called photorelay that makes putting photos on cd a breaze and any computer can read them. The Kodak photo cds have proprietary software called pcd i think and if you want to just put photos on a cd try a cd 'burner' software.
