How to start Potatoe starter

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Bread.com FAQ : One Thread

Years ago a friend gave me a starter that used instant potato flakes sugar and water. You kept it in the refrig. Does any one know how it is orriginally started? I lost mine. It made the best loaf bread I've eaten. It was never strong flavored but just right. You could put any different flour in it and have different breads. I even use to put ground sunflower seeds in it. Yum---Yum.

Gloria,

I believe this may be what you're looking for. If you need the feeding and making bread instructions let me know. I have them also. Here's the STARTER and GOOD LUCK!

STARTER FOR SOURDOUGH BREAD:

1 2oz. pack yeast (usually comes in a 3pk package) 1 cup potato flakes 2 tablespoons sugar 3 cups water

Mix well and store in a glass jar with cheesecloth over top. Leave on counter overnite. Watch for it to start foaming up (you may have to leave it out on counter longer than overnite). Place in refrigerator for 1 day. Then start regular feeding.

Thanks,

Mike

Take care when using glass in fermentation of anything. If the opening should become clogged, there can be danger of explosion.
