Flammable gas shuts Chevron compressor
RichmondA power outage at the Chevron refinery in Richmond caused a compressor to shut down, triggering an automated emergency system that sent flammable gasses to the flare.
Initially, black smoke and excess flames poured out of the flare Friday afternoon as the gasses mixed with steam.
The company notified the Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Program, as required, said Paul Andrews, a hazardous materials specialist with the agency.
"There was never any reason for concern," Andrews said. "Everything operated correctly."
