Can anyone tell me about Gundlach 8X10 cameras. Are they similar to Deardorff? Good camera? Thanks in advance, Steve

Answers

They are similar to Deardorffs in that they are both made of wood, have a ground glass and bellows and are intended to be used to make pictures.

If the price is right, I just bought my first 8x10 camera, a 1902 Kodak D-2 and while its old and creakey so am I. The biggest fault is that there are no front swings or tilt. Depends what you want to use it for I guess.

I own an old Gundlach Wizard and it is a good user. It has no front movements except for rise. Back swings and tilts. There were many camera makes out there that used the same parts like the Korona, Conely, Gundlach, ect. They are good cameras though they often need a tuneup. I remanufactured the rail grooves by installing metal channels for the feet to slide in making the front and rear standards more ridgid. Next I have to fill the hinge holes and redrill to level and tighten the rails so they are straighter. Minor inconveniences that can be taken care of for little time and cost. I also will refinish the body which is made of American Cherry wood. It is a beautiful camera and still tight in the joinery. When you talk about Deardorffs you are talking about the top of the heap. Beautiful cameras. Especially with full movements. I've seen some D2's that have been redone and they were nice cameras too. And thanks for the addresses Sean. James
