How to scan Super8 Movies?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Is it possible to digitize Super8 movies? Transferring to VHS seems so old-fashioned today. Are there any scanners that allow you to scan movie film? Are there businesses that specialize in this service?

Sony sells a media converter to convert composite and s-video signal to firewire which you could use to digitize your movies on a Sony VAIO PC. Certainly there are no scanners that can perform this in any reasonable price range, I'm not even sure if it can be done. Hmmm... 29.97 or 30 frames per second x 2 hours = many scans = expensive = forget it, or look at the Sony part. You may find someone in your local yellow pages that can help if someone already has the equipment, it just may be more cost effective to buy the parts though if you have that much film to digitize.

Well - it could get expensive but there are some alternatives...
If you have a super 8 projector and a video camera you can get a video capture card for your PC and do it yourself. I would just project it on a clean screen and shoot it with your camera - hopefully your camera will compensate for the flicker (if your camera has adjustable shutter speeds this helps). If you don't have the projector and camera then you'd be better off just finding a shop to do it.
Here's a video card that works - but you'll need the card and a copy of Real Producer - all in all setting you back several hundred dollars.
