The Daily Reflector The Greenville Utilities Commission reported Wednesday that 18,000 gallons of sewage spilled when construction crews accidentally cut an electric line to a pumping station Monday.

The spill was discovered at 1:45 p.m. at Brook Valley's pump station, according to a press release. The untreated wastewater ran into Meeting House Branch, a tributary of Hardee Creek.

GUC crews were notified by a remote alarm that an electric line had been cut resulting in a loss of power to the pumping station. Within an hour, they set up a stand-by generator to temporarily supply power to the station, the press release said.

By late afternoon, the electric line was repaired, and the plant was back in full operation. The area around the pump station was cleaned using a chlorine bleach solution.
