Lawmakers Back 'Real' Clothes Sizes

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentina's Senate passed a bill on Wednesday night to require clothing manufacturers to make clothes that fit women of all sizes amid complaints that stores stocked apparel only for thin women.

The law forces clothes makers to produce clothes that fit women's ``anthropomorphic measurements, that is, real sizes and not the abnormal or anorexic sizes of adolescent women,'' state news agency Telam said.

Experts estimate that 1 in 10 Argentine girls suffers from an eating disorder.

``Every day the situation gets worse and more young people are affected by bulimia and anorexia as a consequence of the effects of a globalized society,'' Telam quoted Sen. Leopoldo Moreau, who sponsored the bill, as saying.

The bill must be passed by the Chamber of Deputies before it becomes law.

(Alright, there *are* clothes for larger sized women in some stores, but they're UGLY. U.G.L.Y.!! HOwever, i will pass on the spandex pants. )

And besides that, us tall women can't find pants with crotches in the right place nor shirts with darts where they should be! And when you DO find something for a large woman, it's either a shiny fabric, one that screams "Look at me!" when it should let the eye move right on, or it's got 3/4 sleeves that make it look as if the sleeves are too short, etc., etc., etc. I posted an article on ezboard yesterday about how UK magazines are banning anorexic models.

I sympathize with the sentiments expressed here, but remember to drive past some public housing before you expect the gov to correct the inequities of the fashion industry.

gene, who buys what's cheapest whether it fits or not.

Gene, are you suggesting that starving homeless people are more important in the scheme of things than fashion? I'll have to give this some thought. Maybe my prioritys have been screwed up all these years. Maybe there's more to our world than my closet? Maybe I should give up all materialistic things and go out amongst the poor, giving them my time and a helping hand. Maybe then I would have a real sense of fulfillment? Um...NAH.

In fact, Gene and kritter are both right in what they say, although they appear not to agree. Argentina is a third world country economically, and is also a good 100 years behind the equality issue. Consequently, Argentine women are under enourmous social pressure to survive and prosper through marriage. In order to marry well, or at least to someone who will be able to support them, whatever kids they have, her family, his family, and someones ancient grandmother that has taken residence in their front room, the girls want to be as thin, pretty and glam as possible. They have a lot of competition and in reality, it's a buyers market. (the average buyer being Miguel the nice chap with no teeth that works in his dad's tyre repair shop) Anyway, I'm married to an Argentine, and I'm a 5'7" size 12 fair skinned blonde, which over here is perfectly normal, over there however, I feel like a monster and when I try to find clothes that fit I get snotty chicas giving me pitying looks. I comfort myself with the thought that me and gummy Miguel will never get it on and resist the desire to immediately starve myself, 'cos I don't have to geddit?

I wonder if the day will ever come when we're not under pressure to fit some sociatal demand? Hope Argentine ladies start to let it all hang out baby! :-) Seems revolution is in order! (I'll be right over)

I loved Buenos Aires...is it a buyers(i.e blokes)market?... yes it is...Argentinian people are friendly, very hospitable and helpful...even to a bastard son of the malvinas Englishman like myself(though with a peruvian mum admittedly)

However Argentinian blokes have as about as much charm, gallantry and respect for women as Sid James i.e not a lot...they have those silly goatee beards and long hair that is sometimes or sometimes not tied into a ponytail...they are not very tall...with my 6ft 2ins height I was referred to as a "giant" and also Argentinian blokes have this thing for "piropos" it is meant to complement the lady it is addressed to but it somehow starts off as "aaaaaaaaaaaay chicaaaaaa" and goes off onto an ineloquent and possibly vulgar disscentation about their "femininity"

The one thing Argentine blokes love is "rubia" if you are "rubia" and you are a woman...and you are planning to go to Argentina...then change you airline ticket for Iceland because you are going to get hassle like nothing else...I was talking to my mate Jose Maria he loves "chica rubia" especially Alfano....an old boot whose charms are only obvious to Argentinian blokes...

JM:"Alfano....muy buenaaaa" Me:"you are joking aren't ya...she is about 50 and has more plastic than lego village" JM:"Siiiiiiiiii....buena chica...rubio" Me: "Oh god no...she looks like she has been left under the toaster all day"

(carries on for another hour...we then go onto Pamela Anderson)

But Argentine women are the second best looking women in the world...after the Russians...now the streets of moscow are like a catwalk...I kid you not!!!
