QUAD-CITY TIMES -- July 7, 2000

Some Scott County residents who are supposed to renew their vehicle license plates this month received inaccurate notices that they may owe child support or other debts to the State of Iowa, Scott County Treasurer Bill Fennelly said Thursday.

Corrected notices were to be sent Thursday, he said. Those who have questions about their renewal notices can call the treasurer's office at (319) 326-8664.

"The mistake was made by a vendor for the Iowa Department of Transportation," he said. "About 34,000 of the incorrect notices were sent out across the state. We figure that about 2,200 were sent to Scott County."

The faulty renewal notices have an asterisk next to the amount due that directs the vehicle owner to another part of the notice where they are told that they owe a debt to the state and will not be allowed to renew until it is settled, he said.
