Boil-water advisory continues after main breaks in Bullitt
Kentucky Turnpike Division II customers affected
The Courier-Journal
Customers of the Kentucky Turnpike Water District Division II in Bullitt County are being advised to continue to boil their drinking water today because of yesterday's break in a main.
The advice also applies to water used in cooking.
The recommendation will remain in effect until the results of laboratory tests on the water are known. That could be as early as this evening or tomorrow morning.
Division II includes areas east of Shepherdsville and a large area south of the Salt River in Shepherdsville. All of its 2,600 customers were affected, according to Dan Thibodeaux, chairman of the water district's board. People with Shepherdsville city water were not affected.
Customers were without water for at least six hours yesterday before the break was repaired about 1:30 p.m. The broken line -- a 50-year-old pipe that just gave way -- was in a field in the Gap in Knob community near Ky. 61 and just west of Interstate 65, Thibodeaux said.
The pipes were flushed to get rid of the mud, and clear water was flowing by afternoon, he said.
There was a run on bottled water. The Pic Pac of Shepherdsville sold what is usually a week's supply -- 300 gallons -- by 1 p.m., said Bob Harlamert, a manager.
He planned to have the shelves restocked today.
And over at The Kitchen restaurant on Ky. 44 in Shepherdsville, the staff was adding bleach to the dishwashing water. For beverages, the restaurant bought bottled soft drinks to serve to customers, said Darlene McCubbins, a manager. For those who simply wanted water, she said, "we had some bagged ice and let it melt down." http://www.courier-journal.com/localnews/2000/0007/10/000710wat.html
