Is this really that big a mystery?

Go to the local drug store or camera store and get some liquid lens cleaner and lens tissues and just follow the instructions. If they don't have them in the camera supplies, check by the reading glasses or sunglasses. As you may have guessed they're hard to find locally in some places.(like in the boonies where I live...)

Some people use a blower/brush to get rid of any large bits of dust first, others lightly brush with the lens tissue then apply lens cleaner and wipe/polish with a fresh tissue. Others? One can only guess...

You might also look for an anti-fogging treated lens cleaning cloth. I picked one up tonight and it works pretty well. It so happens that I just cleaned the camera and both accessory lenses in preparation for some early morning snapping.

If possible use only dry tissues. Avoid using liquids as this may permanently damage your lenses.

I've had good luck with the Microporous cloth that you can buy in any camera or eyeglass store. They have very fine pores that wipe up and hold oil without streaking. Works great on fingerprints and doesn't require any liquid. Doesn't hurt to blow off the lens first to remove any loose grit before you rub the cloth on the lens surface.
